City Website Goes Down, Hacker Suspected

Original Post (10/12/12): Last week one of the 500 or so million daily attempts to hack the City of Naperville’s website succeeded, bringing down the website and email systems. The city is working to remedy the situation and believes it to be the work of a skilled hacker, not a virus. Continue reading here.

Update (10/18/12): Naperville has authorized nearly $700,000 to discover how their website and email system was infiltrated and to find the best way to stop it from happening again. Continue reading here.

Update (10/22/12): Naperville’s web and email services are still down and being worked on by officials. In the mean time, the city has created a new email address so it can be contacted via email while the system is still out.  Continue reading here.

Update (10/25/12): Naperville’s city manager states that the website should be almost 100% functional by this Friday but that the email systems will still be down. Continue reading here.

Update 11/26/12): When the city’s network was shut down in early October, city staff had to find a way to adapt and operate, even though they could no longer use the tools needed to conduct business-as-usual. Continue reading here.
